At the start of the NFL’s new league year in March, Green Bay Packers Aaron Jones will become an unrestricted free agent, assuming he is not signed again.
With a running contract, Jones finds himself in a precarious situation with the Packers heading off in the off-season, although it appears he had at least one legal chance to re-sign with the team earlier.
According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, the Packers Jones offered a contract extension that would make him, on average, one of the top five highest paid backs in the NFL annually.
According to this measure, Jones would generate an average of $ 12.5 million per season per OverTheCap with the contract.
Jones’ representative eventually rejected Green Bay’s offer because, according to Demovsky, there was a huge shortage of guaranteed money. Jones then divorced his former agent and hired Drew Rosenhaus.
Jones, who was drafted in the fifth round in 2017, has played all four seasons under his rookie contract.
The Packers quarterback finishes fourth in the NFL in the rush this season (1,104 yards) and is named his first Pro Bowl.
Arguments can be made for or against Jones ‘signing, especially considering the Packers’ current salary cap.
Bringing Jones back could mean the difference between reducing certain veterans or re-signing other key contributors like All-Pro Center Corey Linsley. In addition, the Packers have a promising young rookie runner in AJ Dillon, who can apparently handle more than a full workload.
One thing remains clear, however, Jones is one of Green Bay’s most versatile weapons in attack and a locker room favorite. The Packers ‘front office will make an extremely difficult decision over Jones’ future in the off-season.
