Packers likely to restructure Aaron Rodgers’ contract

The Packers have released more than $ 10 million in headroom by releasing Christian Kirksey and Rick Wagner a few days ago. However, Green Bay is still about $ 13 million above the $ 180 million cap, so there is plenty of work to do before the 2021 league year officially begins on March 17.

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com, the Packers will almost certainly restructure quarterback Aaron Rodgers‘contract in an attempt to create an additional hood room. The 37-year-old signal caller has a base salary of $ 14.7 million in 2021, along with a $ 6.8 million roster bonus payable in March. Green Bay could convert some of the base salary into a signing bonus, a general maneuver the club has already carried out with a left-wing approach. David Bakhtiari.

Rodgers, of course, said shortly after the defeat of the Packers’ NFC Championship in January that his future with the Packers was “uncertain”, which of course led to much speculation. Some reports suggested that his comments were an attempt to secure a new contract that would be a strong commitment of the franchise, the choice of which Jordan Love in the first round of the 2020 draft, Rodgers was clearly irritated. And another report indicated that the comments – which Rodgers later tried to underestimate – were not contractually motivated and that the player and team were heading for a bitter divorce.

Meanwhile, Packers buyers have insisted that Rodgers go nowhere, and Demovsky says the club could certainly undertake a more comprehensive restructuring of Rodgers’ contract than a simple salary-to-bonus conversion. Green Bay selected Love on the heels of three consecutive “off” years from Rodgers (by his standards), but by 2020, Rodgers was nothing short of sensational. He has career highs in completion percentage (70.7%), QBR (84.4) and TD pass (48), so it makes sense for the team to offer a new contract that offers his superstar extra security (financially and otherwise) .

Demovsky also mentions OLB Preston Smith and DE Dean Lowry as potential casualties on the hood.
