Packers coordinating Shawn Mennenga for special teams

The Green Bay Packers will have a new leader of their special teams in 2021.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Matt LaFleur and the Packers separate paths from Shawn Mennenga, special teams coordinator.

LaFleur initially hired Mennenga when he built his first coaching staff with the Packers in 2019. Over the past two seasons, the Packers have ranked 26th and 29th in the NFL on Rick Gosselin’s annual rankings for special teams.

This season, the Packers special teams were responsible for numerous errors and major plays, including two points for returning a point, a blocked point and a well-rounded recovery from the sidelines. They also had one of the worst NFL return units on both points and kicks.

Mennenga replaces Ron Zook, who was Mike McCarthy’s final coordinator for special teams. The Packers were 32nd in special teams before Mennenga’s arrival.
