Our favorite fitness technology: Powerblock dumbbells, Saucony sneakers and Yoga with Adriene

It is difficult for many people to stay fit, especially if you are still avoiding health clubs (or never liking them). A year after many of us started living at home, we are still looking for ways to stay in shape and stay healthy.

We have the staff of The edge which they used to stay fit and healthy during the pandemic and got the following answers.

Fitness videos and websites

Yoga with Adriene

If you are planning to try yoga, I highly recommend the 30-Day Challenges from Adriene Mishler’s YouTube channel Yoga With Adriene. She is very welcoming and makes my wife and I, who are absolute yoga beginners, feel that we do a good job when we arrive at the mat. In later videos, her amazing dog, Benji, shows up and around. – Jay Peters, news writer

305 Fitness

I have never in my life been as sedentary as last winter. If I had a tracker watching my fitness / movement, the last few months would have been a sad, low pit on the chart … thank you, New York winter! Sometimes, if I was scraping together some energy, I would do a 305 cardio video with instructor Sadie. Her energy made me smile and dancing alone in my apartment made me laugh, which is a plus during this time. The music is great and the 40 minutes go by fast because you are actually just dancing. – Alix Diaconis, director

I’ve always been part of hiking trails and other outdoor activities, but the pandemic made it even more appealing – it’s easy to drive at social distance if there are less than 20 people in the area and you have the whole side of the mountain to explore. Hiking Project (and its peers and alternatives like MTB Project, AllTrails and Trailforks) helped me find new and longer hikes – and to keep me from getting lost while doing so. I have also played with the Guthook Guides app as an exercise in daydreaming. – Mitchell Clark, news writer

Saris Fluid Indoor Bike Trainer

I wanted to do indoor cycling exercises, but I did not have the space for an indoor bike, so I wanted to use a bike I already have. My setup is Apple Fitness Plus and a Saris Fluid trainer – I have the original model, but there is a slightly updated model that comes with a smart sensor that can talk to some smartphone apps. Apple Fitness Plus can’t read it, but other indoor bike apps like Zwift or Garmin do.

The Saris is great because I do not have to remove my wheel to use it, it is not terribly hard and is manufactured in Wisconsin. If you want to get something like this, my very strong advice is to buy it at a local bike shop. I did, and they gave me good advice on compatibility with my bike, including diverting me from a valued, incompatible trainer and connecting me to a new axle from the Robert Axle project so my bike would work with the Saris. – Dieter Bohn, Executive Editor

While walking is a great way to do at least one daily movement, it is too easy to shrug and put the mind aside when the weather is wet, cold or generally unpleasant. I decided that an exercise bike might help, but we do not have much space in our small and very busy house. Finally I decide on the Exerpeutic Folding Magnetic Upright exercise bike. It’s not nearly as flashy as the Peloton – it’s not ‘smart’ at all, but I can now step into my living room while watching the contents of my TV, folding it and laying it away until tomorrow. – Barbara Krasnoff, editor of reviews

The Stick Original Muscle Massager

An embarrassing part of my life pandemic was massages. Cycling and running around in NYC hurts you! And putting me in my apartment seems to hurt me, too. This hard foam roller is not a massage, but it is a good replacement and also much cheaper. It is difficult but flexible, which is very effective in working out knots. On top of that, it is easy to use because of the handles, unlike traditional foam rollers which are just cylinders of styrofoam. – Alix Diaconis

PowerBlock Sport 24 adjustable dumbbell

While I missed all the machines at the gym, I knew I would never be able to fit any of them into my apartment. However, the PowerBlock Sport adjustable dumbbells keep me from doing at least some strength training, without taking up the large amount of space that a regular set of weights would do. Having access to weights is a lifesaver for me – I have found that the only reliable way to ward off a repetitive strain injury is doing hand weight rowing. The one downside is that I went with the non-expandable version, and that I did not have to literally bend it, after using it for a year, I will probably have to upgrade it – I’m starting the heaviest setting available. – Mitchell Clark

I invite you to take a look through and look at these Trapper-Keeper-ass shoes. Really, just get their atmosphere. I’ve been through a lot of the pandemic – hell, I’m even started running – and these Saucony trailers are really, really good. They are gripping on unsafe terrain without being too heavy or stiff, and whether I want to jog on a bit of dirt or take a long hike, this is my visit. Obviously, the shoe that best suits you will vary depending on your foot and walk, and so on, but if you want to walk, runners are lighter than hiking shoes and often more comfortable. Plus, you can wear really shocking neon. – Liz Lopatto, Deputy Editor

If you want to go hiking and, like me, find hiking boots unbearably uncomfortable (especially in summer), I can give Bedrock Sandals two thumbs up because they are ultra comfortable and durable hiking boots that will stay comfortable even after a river crossing. or five (and to be versatile enough to bike and carry to the beach or grocery store). – Mitchell Clark
