Otters at Georgia Aquarium test positive for Covid-19

Otters in an aquarium in Georgia tested positive for Covid-19, but are expected to recover completely.

“They began to show mild breathing symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, mild inertia, and some began to cough,” the Georgia Aquarium said in a statement.

According to the aquarium in Atlanta, the Asian otters with small claws are currently doing well.

“Despite the recommendation of the recommended health and safety protocols, it is suspected that the otters contracted the infection from an asymptomatic staff member,” the aquarium said in their statement.

It is rare for such a transfer to occur and the otters are not exhibited while recovering. The animals do not have direct contact with patrons.

The aquarium did not say how many otters tested positive for the virus. Animals, including otters, are not eligible for the Covid-19 vaccine.
