Otter.ai’s new Chrome extension can transcribe Google Meet calls in real time

You can now use the automated transcription service Otter.ai to transcribe and provide captions for Google Meet calls using a new Chrome extension. Meetings are transcribed in real time and transcripts are stored directly in your Otter account so you can access them later.

Otter.ai says the extension works with all its plans, which means that even free users will be able to use the tool.

First download the Otter.ai Chrome extension here to set it up. After installing it, go to meet.google.com and then click on the Otter extension. (You may need to click on the puzzle piece icon to open the expansion menu to find it.) You may then be prompted to sign in to use the extension, even though I was already logged in when I tested it. From there, log in to your meeting, tap the “record” button of the Otter extension, and you will see the transcript begin filling out in real time.

You can also activate captions by clicking the ‘cc’ button, surrounded by a box in the Otter window. But Google Meet already offers a subtitle feature, which you can insert by clicking on a similar icon in the menu at the bottom of a Meet window, so it’s a matter of personal preference to choose which one you like use.

Otter.ai not only transcribes Google Meet calls; the service can also be integrated directly with Zoom. But to use Otter’s integrated transcripts in Zoom, you must have a paid Otter and Zoom plan, unlike with Google Meet.
