The Speedtest app for iOS has added a new data point that you can complain about to your ISP.

Ookla, who makes Speedtest, announced On Monday, it added a video streaming test, which gives you the best resolution to stream video content on all your devices without irritating buffers or hiccups.

The video test is completely different from the standard speed test, which tells you how fast your connection is. Instead, as Ookla explains, the video test plays ‘an actual video to specifically measure the performance of video streaming on your network,’ ‘required’ because video traffic cannot be simulated over a network. ‘The video runs through different resolutions, up to 4K, to judge which resolution is the best, given the features of your wifi.

Of course, good video streaming is a must these days. The covid-19 pandemic forced workers and students into an endless series of video calls, while the entertainment world shifted its attention to streaming services, which became overwhelming. Since many of us have been sitting at home for the past year, our power consumption has exploded according to the Nielsen findings.

‘Americans watched more than 142 billion during the second quarter of 2020 minutes of streaming video, ”Nielsen wrote in August 2020 report. It also found that ‘power consumption is in all video options more than 74% higher than last year— Accelerated by COVID-19 – indicating that streaming is now the present and future of content creation. ”

You can find Speedtest’s new streaming analysis feature at the bottom of the app screen. Just click “Video” and press the giant yellow play button in the middle. A video of what appears to be fiber optic cables will calm you down through the test, which you need to make workable so that it can complete. (Do not check a text in the middle, otherwise you will have to start over.) In Ultimately, it will give you an assessment of the streaming situation of your network. For example, it is recommended that I stream only at a maximum resolution of 1440p wonderful news, because I just blew a few hundred dollars on a 4K TV and dropped cable for YouTube TV. Oh dear!

The video streaming test is currently only available on Speedtest for iOS, but Ookla says he plans to run it on other platforms in the future. If you already have Speedtest, just update the program and you will see the new feature. Otherwise, go download the app – it’s free! And a great tool to negotiate a few dollars over your internet account next time.
