  • The OnePlus 9 Pro features a customizable screen that drops to just 1Hz, a first among phones.
  • It promises fast 120Hz footage without sacrificing battery life.
  • It also offers extremely fast 360Hz touch response.

OnePlus is still dropping details of the 9 Series ahead of its March 23 debut, but it’s one you might be particularly interested in if you love fast screens. The company has revealed that the OnePlus 9 Pro will focus around the screen with a uniquely customizable refresh rate.

‘Fluid Display 2.0’ uses a Samsung-manufactured LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) OLED screen that bounces from a fast 120Hz to just 1Hz when looking at static content – a first for a phone, claims OnePlus . Along with adjustments, the OnePlus 9 Pro screen reportedly uses about half as much power as before. This can be useful if you are browsing photos, reading text or otherwise viewing static material.

LTPO screens are nothing new in the phone world. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, for example, used one. In practice, however, they do not really go as low as 1Hz – AnandTech noted that the note would not drop below 48Hz. In theory, you will get more battery life than with a comparable 120Hz screen.

The OnePlus 9 Pro screen can also be ideal for gaming. It boasts a 360Hz touch response, nicknamed Hyper Touch, which promises to reduce up to 30 ms delay in games. While not the fastest response on the planet (Xiaomi’s Mi 11 is 480Hz), it’s still rare and can make all the difference in action driven games. However, you need special support. Only Call of Duty Mobile, League of Legends, PUBG, en Brawl Stars will work with Hyper Touch first, while other titles will appear in the future.

It’s not sure how much of this display technology will translate to the regular OnePlus 9, although rumors suggest it may have a more conventional 120Hz panel.

OnePlus is undoubtedly in hype mode here – it wants to convince you that the 9 Pro has one of the best screens on the market, and one that you can not get elsewhere (at least for now). Whether the claim is justified or not, it’s clear that OnePlus wants at least one truly competitive screen that can entice you from the Galaxy S21 and other top-tier ships.
