Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may have said goodbye to their royal titles, but one woman in the US is still fighting to earn the “Sussex Royal” name … and she says she’s doing it for the queen !!!
As we first reported, there was a rush here in the United States shortly after the “Megxit” news last year trademark the term, something for which the Duke and Duchess of Sussex applied, but eventually withdrew an attempt to do so only in the United Kingdom.
Since then, however, it seems that everyone in America who has pursued the “Sussex Royal” brand has abandoned their submission … except Carrie Devorah, who applied for the use of the phrase to sell bedding products, specifically for children.
Carrie tells TMZ … she submitted her trademark paperwork in January 2020 because she thinks Queen Elizabeth would not allow Harry and Meghan to utilize their titles, but she did not think there would be anything that would stop her.
Carrie says she thinks the Sussex Royal name is beautiful and she likes its cultural connection with the royal family, and because she was born in Canada, she maintains that she pays homage to the queen.
However, she is facing an uphill battle to close the brand, as the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has already rejected her application because, according to the expression, it is falsely suggesting a connection with Harry and Meghan.
Carrie has a few weeks left to respond to the USPTO’s rejection and tells us that she intends to do so by arguing that Harry and Meghan did not submit the trademark in the US … and also not lying in the bedding. category as she did.
Carrie also says the USPTO’s claim that ‘Sussex Royal’ indicates a connection with Harry and Meghan is unfair, because according to her … the queen never gave the ex-royals permission to commercialize the term. So she does not think it would be a false connection with them.
