One dead, eight injured after blast, burns in Ohio paint plant

One person was killed and eight people were injured in an explosion and a second alarm at an Ohio paint shop Thursday.

About 40 employees were working just after midnight when the blast occurred in one of the five buildings on the Yenkin Majestic Paint campus in Columbus.

While most employees came out of the building when firefighters arrived on the scene, authorities learned that two were trapped, according to Steve Martin, chief of the Columbus Division of the Fire Battalion.

They were eventually rescued and brought to Ohio State University Hospital with critical injuries. Six others were stable.

Martin told NBC News on Thursday afternoon that the body of a person discovered at least five hours after the fire was missing.

He was identified as Wendell Light, 44, a press room supervisor. Martin said his body was partially covered in debris.

The other four buildings on the campus of the paint plant were empty during the explosion and fire. The facility is in an industrial area.

The exact cause of the explosion and fire is being investigated, but there were many chemicals in the building, Martin said.
