One country has almost completely wiped out COVID-19, and that is not the United States.
According to a new study, Israel, which has the most extensive vaccination program and figures in the world, “Fairly eradicated COVID-19 […] at least for now, ”according to a tweet from the study’s co-author, Eran Segal.

The paper, which was published in the journal Nature, found that the mass vaccinations reduced the number of cases and deaths. Compared to Israel’s peak in January, scientists found that after mass vaccinations, there was a 98 percent drop in cases, 93 percent fewer critically ill patients and 87 percent fewer deaths.
Israel vaccinated 61.7 percent of its 9.3 million citizens.
The promising numbers have resulted in the government relaxing mask mandates and the reopening of schools and universities.
However, experts are still cautious. The areas in the West Bank and Gaza have had a much slower vaccination, and the increase in new variants of the coronavirus has raised questions about how long vaccinations for and against which variants will be effective.
Modern announced this month, a booster shot is being worked on to better protect against coronavirus variants that would be available by the end of 2021, and Pfizer said a booster shot will probably be needed within 12 months.
