Late last year, Google launched a revamped Google Pay experience in the US, based on what used to be the Tez app in India. Google now warns that the older Google Pay apps on Android, iOS and web will no longer be able to send and receive money from April.
The transition from the previous Google Pay app to the newer experience was a confusing migration, with Android and iOS users being encouraged to install a separate, Flutter-based app and transfer their money to the new app to access rewards and more. At the same time, Google announced that they would discontinue the ability of the web app to send and receive money.
This afternoon, Google sent out a notification to those using the older Google Pay app, in which they announce that the older Android, iOS and web apps will stop working from April 5 to send, receive and transfer money. access to the balance in your Google Pay account at that time must be obtained with the updated app or manually transferred to your bank account by Google Support.
Similarly, the old Google Pay apps can no longer show your recent activity and transactions. While it looks like the original Android Google Pay app will be effectively dead, it should function specifically for accessing your digital wallet, including your credit / debit cards, membership cards, and transit cards. Even if you use the new Google Pay experience, the wallet access of the older app on Android is still useful, as the new Google Pay can only be used on one device at a time.
The timing of this migration is particularly interesting as the upgraded Google Pay app is currently listed in the Play Store as ‘Early Access’. It is unknown whether the app will be upgraded from early access before the April deadline, or how these changes will affect the areas where the new Google Pay is not available at all.
Along with the migration to the new Google Pay app, April 5 also marks the date on which Google Pay’s new terms of service will take effect. While most changes are relatively uninteresting, it should be noted that the minimum age for a Google Pay account at least changes from 16 to 18 in the US.
