Officials say the borserant at the San Antonio joint base was shot dead along I-10 on New Year’s Day

SAN ANTONIO According to the JBSA, a drilling sergeant assigned to the U.S. military’s medical center at the San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston joint base has died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Sers. Jessica Mitchell, a dentist in 68E, was pronounced dead at San Antonio University Hospital around 3 a.m. Friday, according to the JBSA.

Hospital staff informed the unit that Mitchell, who was on vacation at the time, was the victim of multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers were dispatched about 30 minutes earlier in the morning to a call for a shooting along I-10 near West Avenue.

San Antonio police and the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division are still investigating the situation.

Mitchell has been employed by MEDCoE since August 2019. Prior to work, she had been in a JBSA dental clinic since October 2017.

‘We are devastated by the tragic loss of drilling sergeant Jessica Mitchell. Our deepest condolences to her family and friends. We are focused on supporting drilling sergeant Mitchell as well as her soldiers during this extremely difficult time, “said Major General Dennis LeMaster, Commandant-General MEDCoE.
