Officials discuss Trump’s 25th amendment to violence at Capitol

Administration officials have begun discussing the possibility of recalling the 25th amendment to remove President TrumpDonald Trump Warnock defeats Loeffler in the run-up to the Senate in Georgia. The memorandum: Georgia voters give a blow to Trump Eric Trump warns of primary challenges for Republicans who no longer object to election results according to a source familiar with the matter.

Officials have exchanged calls and messages about the extraordinary measure, which requires a majority of Cabinet officials plus Vice President Pence to declare to Congress that Trump cannot fulfill his duties as president.

The discussions appear to be limited and it is not clear whether this has reached the level of any cabinet officials. It is not clear that officials would actually continue to call for the 25th Amendment, or that enough cabinet members would even support it, especially since Trump only has two weeks in office.

A White House official said Pence was not approached or involved in the pursuit of the 25th Amendment.

The fact that it is being discussed still reflects how quickly Trump’s position weakened over the course of the day Wednesday, which sees him urging supporters to march to the Capitol before entering the building after the overwhelming police.

One former White House official acknowledged the possibility of talking about the 25th amendment, but said they did not get the feeling at the time that there were serious discussions about it.

Trump’s cabinet contains many officials who were extraordinarily loyal to him, and it seems doubtful whether a majority would agree to remove him.

Meanwhile, Democrats have increased public pressure on Trump administration officials to take the extraordinary step. A group of Democrats in the House Law Committee sent a letter to Pence on Wednesday night calling on him to appeal the 25th Amendment and remove Trump from office after the chaotic events of the day. Some Democrats also called charged with Trump and removed from office.

The National Association of Manufacturers, a trade group that has had influence in the Trump administration, has also issued a statement saying Pence should seriously consider joining the cabinet in calling for the 25th Amendment to preserve democracy. ‘

Republicans have also publicly reprimanded Trump in the wake of the violence, saying he bears responsibility.

CBS News first reported that there was talk of using the 25th Amendment to remove Trump. Axios later reported that senior State Department officials were encouraging talks on the measure.

Discussions about how Trump’s last two weeks in office should be handled, or if he should be removed before then, have heated up in response to the violence that engulfed the Capitol building on Wednesday.

During a rally at the White House Ellipse, Trump further ignited the flames of conspiracy by again falsely insisting that he win the 2020 presidential election. He encouraged his supporters to march to the Capitol and thicken their voices.

A short time later, Trump supporters overwhelmed law enforcement outside the Capitol and trespassed on the building. Lawmakers, staff, press and Pence were all evacuated or ordered to take refuge in their place. One woman was shot dead in the chaos.

In subsequent statements, Trump called for peace, but at no point condemned the violence by his supporters. Instead, he apparently approved it and called his supporters ‘great patriots’ who reacted to the election and the rioters said, ‘Remember this day forever!’

Three White House staffers then resigned on Wednesday, with additional departure in the coming days.
