Offensive sign in downtown Omaha creates a storm on social media

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A photo is worth a thousand words and this one posted on Gulliver’s World Goods Facebook page is causing controversy.

“I could not believe that someone in our community would publicly put up a sign with the words ‘do not feed the wild animals, do not feed the homeless’. They are our brothers and sisters, ”said Lisa Clark.

The sign is nowhere to be found. As fast as it came. But the image is always shared online.

“It was very upsetting to me because I had been a mother for over 16 years,” Lisa said. I was many times about to become homeless so many times. ”

Gulliver’s World Goods Manager, Matt, claims he was even homeless for a while and says he has no idea who would place the sign outside the store.

“It’s not me, it’s not the ownership here,” Matt said. We are compassionate people. Like I said: we lived here, dressed, fed, and I employed one here when we first came. Doing weird work, painting, stuff like that. This is clearly not how we feel about their fate. ”

But in a post on the Gulliver’s Facebook page, the store says it was an “extremely poor judgment choice an employee made” and that the employee was terminated.

However, one of Gulliver’s co-owners, Chaz Kline, contradicts this. In a phone call, Kline says no one was fired, they investigate and take full responsibility for what was placed on their property. Clark hopes people use it as a moment to think and help those in need.

“Nothing about homelessness is funny,” Lisa said. And I really want to appeal to everyone during this pandemic and just during this time in our society. We need to be kind to each other. ”

According to other posts on social media, the sign next to the same business was also placed in their window. Several calls and a message to management were not returned.

Here’s a new sign posted at Gulliver’s.
