According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Obi Toppin, a former Brooklyn streetballer nicknamed “Dunkers Delight”, will compete in the NBA Slam Dunk Match 2020-21, giving the Knicks another representative during the All-Star Weekend with Julius Randle.
Toppin had previously teased that he might participate in the match, but everyone knows nothing is official before it was tweeted by Shams or Woj.

Toppin is the eighth overall pick in this year’s draft and has mostly worked on the bench behind Randle, playing just 12 minutes a night after missing the first ten games of the season due to injury. He has yet to showcase the overall offensive arsenal he was allocated on draft night, but there is one thing that Toppin has certainly done. This is the ability to dip.
He covered your standard rising dunk.
He dropped that basic dunk where you are taller than humanly possible.
And of course, like most of us, he can hit it home after catching a pass on the side of the backboard and placing the ball between his legs while in the air.
In fact, Toppin is a dedicated dunker and has always been, dating back to his college days.
In fact, Toppin remembers his first dunk. According to this profile of the newcomer from Bleacher Report, he wanted to immerse himself all his life and eventually dropped the summer before his high school year.
“It was pure relief,” Toppin said. And then there was excitement. It took so long. That’s why I still dive every time I can now. I just really started dipping like three or four years ago. It’s still new to me. It’s still such a wonderful feeling every time. ”
This is apparently the 8th time the Knicks have had anyone in both the dunk game and the All-Star game, which is pretty cool.
Sorry, 8TH TIME Knicks already had someone in both the All Star Game and the Dunk Contest:
1986: Ewing & Gerald Wilkins
1990 & ’91: Ewing & Kenny Walker
1992: Ewing and John Starks
1996: Ewing & Doug Christie
2010: David Lee and Nate Robinson
2013: Melo / Tyson & James White
2021: JR / Obi– Jonathan Macri (@JCMacriNBA) 26 February 2021
None of the other contestants for this year’s contest have been nominated yet. This year’s game takes place during the break of the All-Star Game, as you know, the pandemic. It’s nice that Toppin did not make the team as the last few Knicks that participated (Dennis Smith Jr. and James White) make the franchise look fantastic.
Toppin turns 23 a few days before the All-Star Weekend; what better way is it to celebrate than to assert your dominance as a top dunker? He definitely hopes to do so. We hope he will too.
