NY to follow relaxed CDC guidance on Covid quarantines for those fully vaccinated

Albany, NY – New York will follow the updated guidance of the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention on quarantines for individuals who are fully vaccinated and who are exposed to someone with Covid-19.

According to a new statement from Governor Andrew Cuomo and dr. Howard Zucker, a state health commissioner, said the state would no longer require quarantines for asymptomatic, fully vaccinated individuals exposed to someone with a suspected or confirmed case of Covid. Individuals who have been fully vaccinated are those who have received both doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine and who have been at least two weeks since their second shot.

The two weeks are necessary to fully build up an individual’s immunity after the second dose. According to the CDC, it will also take two weeks after the vaccination of one dose that will be approved in the future.

In addition, the quarantine requirement is waived if exposure occurs within 90 days after the final shot of an individual. According to CNN, it is still unclear exactly how long protection against the vaccines will last.

People who have been vaccinated should be quarantined if they have symptoms.

The CDC yesterday updated its guidelines on exposure quarantines for vaccines.

“From the beginning of the pandemic, the state of New York has been following science and listening to the experts, and the quarantine requirements only for New Yorkers who have received both shots will be updated in the same way to reflect the CDC’s new leadership, “reads the statement of Cuomo and Zucker said. However, the science of Covid vaccination after vaccination remains troubled, and this updated guidance is not clear to New Yorkers to let go of their disappointment.

“All New Yorkers, including those who have been fully vaccinated, must continue to wear masks, keep social distance and be smart until herd immunity is reached and this pandemic is fully transmitted in the history books.”
