Nvidia RTX 3060 exploits Ether at full power as miners allegedly bypass hash limits

Nvidia’s attempt to divert Ether (ETH) miners from its new GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card by limiting the hash rate appears to be short-lived.

Screenshots mailed by tech-leaked Twitter account I_Leak_VN shows a stack of eight RTX 3060 graphics cards working well above Nvidia’s 20-25 MH / s mining limitations, while allegedly using Ethgerum’s Dagger-Hashimoto mining algorithm.

On the same day, a Facebook group from Vietnam with a cryptocurrency posted a graphic announcing that the RTX 3060 was indeed bypassed and then able to reach its full power of 50 MH / s thanks to a mod.

According to reports on March 10, Nvidia’s mandatory limits for Ether mining were apparently achieved with the help of a personal adjustment. It flies in the face of a recent announcement by Nvidia’s global director of public relations, Bryan Del Rizzo, who said on February 21 that secure interactions between GPU hardware, driver software and computer firmware would remove the hash restriction limit occurs.

“It’s not just a driver. There is a secure handshake between the driver, the RTX 3060 silicone and the BIOS (firmware) that prevents the removal of the hash speed limit, ”Del Rizzo wrote on Twitter.

Nvidia’s setting of the hash limit is designed to make its cards less attractive to cryptocurrency miners – specifically those exploiting Ether. This follows the great concern expressed by game lovers, who are worried about a new shortage of GPU due to the demand of miners. According to Nvidia, Ether was specifically targeted because it had the highest global mining yield among GPU minable coins.

Along with the decision to limit the efficiency of Ether mining, Nvidia also announced the release of a graphics card created specifically for cryptocurrency mining. The CMP line is mentioned, and the cards had to be marketed to miners and had to be deprived of the display outputs that are considered unnecessary for crypto mining.

But with the rise of the above amendment, these plans may now be in the air and could lead to a mad rush by prospective miners to sharpen more units of the RTX 3060. Nvidia’s future plans are also called into question, given that it intended to release the upcoming RTX 3080 Ti with the same Ether mining restrictions.

Nvidia did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Cointelegraph.
