If you’ve been struggling to figure out where to buy the Nvidia RTX 3080 or any other Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 Series graphics card, you’ve probably been struck by slaps.
An analysis of the GPU retailer market has revealed the extent of the problem, with nearly 50,000 Nvidia Ampere cards sold on just two websites.
Oracle data analyst Michael Driscoll has created a text that retrieves data from two of the largest reseller haunted houses: eBay and StockX. The analyst found that scalpers earned about $ 15 million in total profits.
Meanwhile, ordinary consumers are facing permanent shortages of the entire Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 series, as well as other rarer favorites such as the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Driscoll’s analysis revealed not only the large quantities in which the GPUs are resold, but also the huge upgrade scalpers. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 and GeForce RTX 3060 Ti seem to have the worst: on eBay, both GPUs sold at more than double their respective MSRPs at a median price.
Most of the shares ended up on eBay, with 39,064 units resold compared to 10,616 on StockX. The GeForce RTX 3080 is the best-selling model on eBay, where it moved 14,066 units, while the GeForce RTX 3070 carefully sold out the RTX 3080 on StockX with 3,677 sales to 3,473.
Prices have also risen even higher due to the recent new tariffs on computer components imported from China, and according to Driscoll, MSRPs have risen between 7% and 25%. It is not surprising that traders have increased their prices just as much.
This is another gloomy reminder of how inefficient retailers have been in ensuring that inventory falls into the hands of ordinary customers, and not through the reseller.
It is also a sign of how huge the reseller market is. Many GeForce RTX 30 Series stock we’ve seen contain only units in the double digits. Imagine how much of this stock is immediately cleared by scalpers again to achieve nearly 50,000 sales. And it’s not even a new eBay and StockX list that’s not sold yet.
We would like to say that the situation will improve sooner rather than later. But this does not seem to be the case; the stock shortage will continue for at least a few more months.
