Jon Peddie Research recently published its GPU market share statistics for the fourth quarter of 2020, showing that NVIDIA has managed to send more discrete graphics cards compared to AMD, despite ongoing inventory and availability issues that have plagued hardware has been introduced.
Q4 2020 GPU market share results show NVIDIA rises while AMD loses a bit, Intel gains a large share of total GPU market share
If we look at the total market, global GPU shipments increased to 20.5%, which was a growth of 12.4% compared to the previous year. The research firm predicted that the installed / shipped GPU base would increase to 419 million units during 2020-2025. The PC market is generally showing signs of recovery after the pandemic disrupted global operations. Overall GPU shipments increased by 20.5% compared to the previous quarter.
The general computer market increased by 30.25% quarter-on-quarter and increased by 35.76% year-on-year. via JPR
Intel’s total shipments increased by 20.5%, AMD’s shipments increased by 6.4% while NVIDIA had a decrease of 7.3%. These are overall GPU shipments and Intel / AMD both offered some strong products to users with their Renoir and Comet Lake products. Intel has also managed to send many more 14nm computer processors that contain their own integrated graphics solutions, and this is also included in these figures.
Quick highlights
- AMD’s total unit shipments increased by 6.4% quarter-on-quarter, Intel’s total shipments increased by 33.2% compared to the previous quarter, and Nvidia’s decreased by -7.3%.
- The GPU’s overall connectivity speed (which includes integrated and discrete GPUs, desktop, notebook and workstations) for computers for the quarter was
- 113%, a decrease of -9.2% from the previous quarter.
- The general computer market increased by 30.25% quarter-on-quarter and increased by 35.76% year-on-year.
- Desktop graphics add-on cards (AIBs using discrete GPUs) decreased by -3.90% from the last quarter.
- Q4’20 had an increase in tablet shipments from last quarter.
If we look at the separate graphics segment, the market segment sees profit with NVIDIA gaining a 2-point lead over AMD. NVIDIA GeForce GPUs now make up 82% of the total GPU market share, while AMD Radeon graphics cards make up 18%. This is a huge increase compared to the previous year in which NVIDIA stood at 73% discreet and AMD at 27%. NVIDIA not only released high-end GeForce RTX 30 GPUs, but also launched more mainstream GPUs in the first quarter of 2021, which would also help them increase market share in the upcoming results.
While NVIDIA and AMD are both facing huge supply and demand problems, the green team was able to offer a slightly better flow of its separate graphics cards compared to AMD’s Radeon RX 6000 series. Another contributing factor to NVIDIA’s higher market share gains is due to cryptocurrency exploitation. NVIDIA has taken steps to curb crypto-mining operations by limiting hash rates on its upcoming GeForce graphics cards and has also announced its CMP range dedicated to the crypto-mining segment, but we’ll have to see how it grows in the market share affected in the coming quarters.
