NPD 2020: Nintendo Switch was hardware no. 1, PS5 no. 2

The Nintendo Switch dominated hardware sales in the United States throughout 2020. It easily surpassed its last generation competition in the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and remains better than PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S due to their limited offerings. According to the NPD Group, industry tracking firm The NPD, the hybrid home / handheld Nintendo console was the best hardware of the year as well as December.

“Nintendo Switch was not only in December 2020, but also all year, the best-selling hardware platform in units and dollars,” said Mat Piscatella, NPD analyst. ‘The annual dollar sales of Nintendo Switch hardware were the second highest for an individual platform in a single calendar year in U.S. history. Only Nintendo Wii sales in 2008 were higher. ”

PlayStation 5, which is still hard to find online or in stores, also sold well.

“PlayStation 5 ends 2020 as the number 2 best-selling console in dollar sales, while PlayStation 4 ranks second in the units sold,” Piscatella said. “PlayStation 5 set a new dollar sales record for PlayStation hardware in the first of December in every retail store.”

Microsoft has said that Xbox Series X / S is the best launch in Xbox history.

But the success of the hardware of Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft has raised the category to a record high.

“Hardware dollar sales reached $ 1.35 billion in December 2020,” Piscatella said. “This is an increase of 38% compared to a year ago, and the highest total for a month of December since the $ 1.37 billion achieved in December 2013. Annual hardware dollar sales are $ 5.3 billion, 35% higher than 2019, and the most since $ 5.6 billion was reached in 2011. ”
