The North Texas football businessman was among three people shot dead in an apartment complex in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, the Elgin (Texas) Independent School District confirmed in a statement.
Willie Simmons III, a senior at Elgin High School, signed with Mean Green in December and would join the team this summer. According to the school district, Alyssa Broderick, who played in the school’s girls basketball team, was also killed during the shooting.
Another woman was allegedly killed along with Simmons and Broderick. Police have not yet identified the victims.
“We are saddened by the news of this senseless tragedy, and express our deepest condolences to the families of Willie Simmons III and Alyssa Broderick,” Elod ISD Superintendent Jodi Duron said in a statement. “The Elgin ISD community mourns the loss of these two young, promising souls.”
According to Duron, Simmons was an extraordinary young man and a leader among his peers. Strong, academically and athletically, was the best of Elgin ISD. He was captain of our football team; a friend to everyone he met; recruited to play football for the University of North Texas. ‘
The North Texas football website noted that Simmons, a linebacker, was a two-time unanimous pick for the entire district and a three-time academic nomination for the entire district.
Mean Green coach Seth Littrell could not be immediately reached for comment.
Police announced Monday that Stephen Broderick, 41, has been arrested. According to police interim chief Joseph Chacon, officers have been searching for Broderick, a former deputy president at the Sheriff’s Office in Austin, since Sunday.
Chacon also told reporters that the victims were all known among this suspect.
The Austin American from Austin reported that Broderick was arrested without assault Monday around 8:30 p.m. According to the report, two people called 911 after seeing a man walking outside Manor, Texas. The U.S. statesman reported that Manor police officers and sheriff’s deputies in Travis County arrested Broderick, who was armed.
Jose Garza, district attorney in Travis County, said in a statement Sunday that Broderick was arrested in June for allegedly sexually assaulting a child. He was released on a $ 50,000 bond.
