In August 2019, the naked body of Nora Anne Quoirin (15), who was suffering from learning difficulties, was found in a gorge near the Dusun holiday resort where her family lived in Seremban, about 70 kilometers south of the Malaysian capital. .
The Seremban court closed the investigation on Monday, saying there was insufficient evidence to indicate foul play.
Police had ruled it out earlier, but her family questioned the findings, saying she had never voluntarily left them before.
Malaysia opened an investigation into the death in August at the request of the family, with proceedings instituted online due to coronavirus restrictions.
The court ruled Monday that no one was involved in Quoirin’s death and that she was more likely to have simply strayed into the jungle.
“It was more likely than not that she died of miscarriage …”
“For me to speculate and assume about her actions and involvement of a third party without any evidence would violate my duty to close the investigation.”
An attorney for the family did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Her parents, Sebastien and Meabh Quoirin, appeared directly in court proceedings while the decision was read.
Her mother Meabh, one of nearly 50 witnesses who testified at the inquest, said she believed her daughter would be abducted and accused authorities of not taking her concerns seriously.
However, police said there was no evidence that Quoirin had been abducted and insisted their investigation was thorough.
