According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii following a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Japan.

The quake occurred at 23:09 Hawaii time on Friday or 18:09 Saturday in Japan. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake was 16.7 kilometers east of Ishinomaki at a depth of 33.5 kilometers. It is off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture, in the rugged northeast of the country, which was badly damaged during the great earthquake and tsunami in 2011.

“Based on all available data, a devastating tsunami in the Pacific is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” the Pacific Warning Center said in a release.

Buildings shook in the Japanese capital Tokyo and a tsunami alert was issued for the country’s north coast. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The tsunami advice was issued for Miyagi prefecture and officials there said there were no immediate reports of damage.
