Rihanna came under fierce attack online after expressing her support for the farmers’ movement.

New Delhi:

A doctor-like image showing superstar Rihanna allegedly holding a Pakistani flag was widely circulated after she expressed solidarity with farmers protesting against agricultural legislation in India.

However, the original image is more than a year old, of Rihanna holding up a Cricket West Indies (CWI) flag during a match in the British city of Chester-le-Street during the 2019 World Cup.

The doctored image was published in a Facebook post on February 3 and was shared hundreds of times, the AFP news agency said in a fact-checking report.

On 1 July 2019, the International Cricket Council (ICC) tweeted the original photo of the pop icon with the flag of Cricket West Indies when West Indies played Sri Lanka during the World Cup cricket that year.

“Look who’s at #SLvWI to Rally ‘around the West Indies! Watch out for @ rihanna’s new single, Shut Up And Cover Drive Winking face,” ICC tweeted along with the photo.

The official Twitter account of Cricket West Indies tweeted a photo of Rihanna in the stadium. The Barbados-born singer was dressed in white and wore sunglasses.

A six-word tweet this week by Rihanna, which has more than 100 million followers on Twitter (and counts), unleashed a storm, with several U.S. lawmakers and celebrities following.

This is what she tweeted: “Why are we not talking about this #FarmersProtest?”

Rihanna also shared an article about the farmers’ protest by the US news agency CNN.

The growing international support for the farmers’ movement prompted the government on Wednesday to issue a cautionary statement warning against the “temptation of sensationalist hashtags and comments on social media”.

Rihanna is under heavy attack online because she has expressed her support for the peasant movement, and many accuse her and others of vested interests. Actor Kangana Ranaut calls her a ‘fool’ and calls the protesters ‘terrorists’ and that they are trying to divide India.
