No danger in grenade found in the garden of E. Cabarrus St. :: WRAL.com

An investigation found that a hand grenade found in a Raleigh yard on Sunday posed no danger.

A Raleigh police spokesman said the grenade was genuine, but a hole was drilled in the bottom, with no gunpowder inside. He added that the grenade is sold in surplus stores as a novelty item.

Officials said the grenade was very rusty because it had been underground for a long time.

Residents of the 600 block of East Cabarrus Street endured several tense hours – three houses were briefly evacuated – after a person doing the gardening found the grenade and called police.

Three members of the Raleigh police bomb squad removed the grenade and determined it was not a threat.

It was not immediately clear where the grenade could have come from, how old it was or how long it could have been in the garden.
