NJ reports 3,429 COVID cases, 61 deaths as hospitalizations are 2,000 for the first time in a month

New Jersey reported Tuesday another 3,429 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 27 additional confirmed deaths, as the number of people hospitalized in the state exceeded 2,000 patients for the first time in nearly a month.

Gov. Phil Murphy said Monday when he declared that New Jersey was “back to the nation in spreading this virus,” that the recent increase likely means there will be no additional announcements in the near future about the weakening of restrictions.

The Garden State’s average of seven days for newly confirmed cases is now 3,391, up 11% from a week ago and 29% from a month ago. This is the highest average of seven days since February 4th.

There were 2,066 coronavirus patients in New Jersey’s hospitals as of Monday night – the first time more than 2,000 patients have been reported since Feb. 25, according to state data. Hospitalizations have been down since mid-January when more than 3,700 patients were treated, but have been hovering nearly 2,000 for two weeks.

New Jersey health care and vaccination centers have now administered about 3.56 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine – including more than 1.26 million people who are considered fully vaccinated according to state data. About 500,000 doses of vaccine were administered last week, Murphy said.

The state’s goal is to vaccinate 70% of its adults – about 4.7 million people – by the end of May. More than 18% of the adult population was fully vaccinated and more than half of the adults were administered at least once.

New Jersey’s transmission rate remained the same at 1.09 on Tuesday. Any number of more than 1 indicates that the outbreak is growing, with each new case having at least one other case.

In total, New Jersey now reported 770,980 confirms coronavirus cases from more than 11.6 million PCR tests in the year since the state reported its first case on March 4, 2020. There were also 102,860 positive antigen tests. These cases are considered likely, and health officials have warned that positive antigen tests may overlap with the confirmed PCR tests, as they are sometimes given at the same time.

According to the state of 9 million people, 24,242 inhabitants died complications associated with COVID-19 – 21,727 confirmed deaths and 2,515 deaths considered probable.

New Jersey on Friday raised the limit for indoor and outdoor gatherings from 25 to 50 people and increased the capacity limits for restaurants, gyms and health clubs, recreational facilities and arcades, and businesses for personal care to 50%. But mask mandates and guidelines for social distance will remain in force.

HOSPITALIZATIONS

Hospitalizations from 22/22/21

Number of daily hospitalizations from 22 March.

As of Monday night, 2066 patients have been admitted to the hospital with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 cases in New Jersey’s 71 hospitals – 73 more than the night before, according to the state’s dashboard.

This included 433 in critical or intensive care (five more than the previous day), with 234 on ventilators (17 more).

There was also 185 COVID-19 patients were discharged Monday.

Hospitalizations peaked at more than 8,000 patients during the first wave of the pandemic in April.

SCHOOL SUBJECTS

In New Jersey, 188 coronavirus outbreaks have been reported at school, resulting in 890 cases among students, teachers and school staff, according to academic year.

The state defines school outbreaks as cases where contact detectives determined that two or more students or school staff caught or transmitted COVID-19 in the classroom or during academic activities at school. These numbers do not include students or staff who are suspected of being infected outside the school, or cases that cannot be confirmed as outbreaks in the school.

There are about 1.4 million public school students and teachers across the state, although teaching methods vary amid the outbreak, with some schools teaching in person, some using a hybrid format and others being quite out of control.

Murphy on Wednesday called on more schools in New Jersey to return to personal learning. He also said officials “fully expect” schools across New Jersey to return for personal learning “safely and responsibly” when the next school year begins in September.

AGE BREAKS OUT

Degraded by age, those aged 30 to 49 form the largest percentage of New Jersey residents who contracted the virus (30.9%), followed by those aged 50-64 (23%), 18-29 (19.7%). %), 65-79 (10.7%), 5-17 (8.9%), 80 and older (4.8%) and 0-4 (1.8%).

On average, the virus was more deadly to older residents, especially those with a pre-existing condition. Nearly half of COVID-19 deaths were among residents 80 and older (47.07%), followed by 65-79 (32.79%), 50-64 (15.68%), 30-49 ( 4.05%), 18-29 (0.37%), 5-17 (0%) and 0-4 (0.02%).

At least 7,972 of the COVID-19 deaths in the state were among residents and staff members at nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.

There are active outbreaks at 240 facilities, resulting in 4,275 active cases among residents and 4,855 among staff.

GENERAL NUMBERS

According to Tuesday morning, there were 124 million positive COVID-19 tests worldwide, according to a running count from Johns Hopkins University. More than 2.75 million people have died from coronavirus-related complications.

The U.S. reported the most cases, more than 29.8 million, and the most deaths, more than 542,900.
