Northern and central parts of New Jersey are now supporting even more snow than originally projected because a large, prolonged northeasterly winter storm is expected to cause the state to drop Sunday through Tuesday and possibly fall to 18 centimeters in some areas, according to the updated forecasts.

Early projections of 8 to 12 centimeters of snow have now jumped to 12 to 18 centimeters, including Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth and Morris, according to the National Weather Service. Early projections of 6 to 8 centimeters of snow rose to 8 to 12 centimeters in the provinces of Sussex and Warren.

Snowfall projections for the provinces of Bergen, Essex and Passaic were between 8 and 10 centimeters on Saturday morning. They were also raised to 12 to 18 inches in a forecast map (posted below) updated at 4:30 p.m.

Forecasts of snowfall have dropped in parts of South Jersey, which can be hit mostly by a mix of snow, sleet and rain. Projections in the Vineland area of Cumberland County dropped from 6 to 8 inches to 4 to 6 inches, and the Toms River area of Ocean County dropped from 6 to 8 inches to 3 to 4 inches.

The storm could also cause coastal flooding and strong gusts of wind, which could potentially lead to power outages. Travel is expected to be difficult thanks to snow and wind.

The National Weather Service has put large parts of New Jersey under a winter storm warning. The agency warns that road conditions are likely to be dangerous from late Sunday night until much of Monday.

“Travel can be very difficult to impossible,” according to the warnings.
