Nintendo Switch Pro gets an OLED screen

According to Nintendo, it will probably launch a ‘Pro’ model of its Switch gaming console later, according to a new report from Bloomberg, a larger Samsung OLED screen.

Samsung Display Co. will already begin mass production of seven-inch, 720p resolution OLED panels in June, with an initial monthly target of just under a million units. The exhibits will be sent to collectors around July.

The Switch is in its fifth year and is still selling well against the Xbox and PlayStation – aided by titles such as ‘Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ and a shortage of semiconductors that limit the supply of competing machines.

However, the console is now seen as powerless compared to the new ones in the block, and there has been talk of a more premium version of the Switch with an OLED screen and support for 4K graphics.

While Nintendo has remained radio silent, Samsung’s involvement is the strongest indication that the company is serious about updating the console, and the 7-inch rigid OLED panels are expected to offer less battery consumption, higher contrast and possibly faster response time than the current 6.2 inches.
