Nintendo Life eShop Selects – December 2020 – Feature

EShop Selects

December was another busy month on the Nintendo Switch eShop, with many fantastic games to choose from for holiday fun. Of course, we should probably get rid of the good old Nintendo Life eShop Selects awards!

These awards are aimed at celebrating the best of Nintendo’s digital store, giving love and attention to the games that can so easily be missed in the Switch’s ever-growing library.

So let’s start. Here are the best Switch eShop games of December 2020!

Honorable mentions:

While these titles did not make our top three this month, they are definitely worth a look.

Publisher: Derivatives / Developer: Derivatives

Issue Date: 15 December 2020 (USA) / 15 December 2020 (UK / EU)

Dicey Dungeons is a third place this month, a cute, furious but dangerous pleasant roguelike adventure. The game takes place in a bizarre game show, where players are turned into a game star and have to fight through a series of treacherous, shifting dungeons that rule by chance. In our review we have it a very strong 9/10, with praise for his variety, music and fighting system. Read it and read the game if it sounds like it might be your thing.

Publisher: Innersloth / Developer: Innersloth

Issue Date: 15 December 2020 (USA) / 15 December 2020 (UK / EU)

Second is one you’ve probably heard of, even if you haven’t had a chance to play it yet: Among Us. This one took the gaming world by storm over the fourteen locks we’ve faced recently, so it’s no surprise that the Nintendo Life team had a lot of fun with it now that it’s finally on Switch.

You need a group of friends and a separate voice chat app to get the most out of this app, but if you overcome these obstacles, it’s an instantly accessible and super addictive gaming experience perfect for getting online goers. Get started if you have not already done so!

DOOM Eternal (link eShop)DOOM Eternal (link eShop)

Publisher: Bethesda / Developer: id software

Issue Date: 8 Dec 2020 (USA) / 8 Dec 2020 (UK / EU)

And to take the gold is a game that in the first place probably should not have even qualified for the awards. Yes, DOOM Eternal is technical a digital e-shop game on Nintendo’s platform, which means that despite its large fanbase and its equally large budget, it does indeed meet our strict criteria.

Of course, the big discussion point here is the serious, but unfortunately essential, visual downgrade needed to make the game work nicely on Switch. We’ll admit that it looks significantly better on other systems, but the fact that Panic Button made the thing spin on a small portable tablet – at a solid 30 fps, no less – is noteworthy.

Throw in the fact that the game itself is yet another amazing, grim, devil-wielding journey through hell, which is just as satisfying as you would hope, and it’s getting pretty easy to see why we named it the bunch. Rip and tear, people. Tear. And. Tear.

How we decide to choose our eShop top three: At the end of each month, Nintendo Life staff vote on their favorite titles from a list of games selected by the editors. To be eligible for this list, these games must be released as a digital Nintendo Switch eShop title in the relevant month, and must be reviewed on Nintendo Life; we select the qualifying games based on their rating points.

Staff are then asked to vote for three matches that they believe deserve to be at the very top of the list; first choice gets 3 points, second choice gets 2 points, and third choice gets 1 point. These votes are then added together to create a top three list, with the overall winner achieving this month’s top prize.
