Nintendo has released a software update for its dwindling Wii U console, the first in nearly two and a half years. The console made the big leap from version 5.5.3 to … 5.5.5.
The patch notes are frustratingly vague, so it’s hard to know exactly what has changed. “Further improvements to the overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to improve the user experience,” the patch notes. I can not say that I ever fell back on my Wii U when I had one, but I think more stability is good for the likely few people who still use the console.
Nintendo largely abandoned the Wii U in favor of the hugely popular Nintendo Switch and transferred many of the best games from the older console, including Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong Land: Tropical Freeze, Pikmin 3, and recently, Super Mario 3D World.
There are a few more Wii U exclusives worth keeping it included, such as The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD, en Xenoblade Chronicles X. But given how readily Nintendo has transferred its best Wii U games to the Switch, there is a chance that they may also be transferred, further aging the Wii U.
At least the Wii U is a little more stable now.
