Hype is pretty high for Godzilla teen Kong after the release of the first trailer of the film, and one Nintendo fan took the opportunity to re-imagine the upcoming battle with some of the company’s characters. Artist @ TinaFate1 on Twitter shared an amazing match between another dinosaur and monkey: Bowser and Donkey Kong! The characters seem to fit in pretty well with the two monsters, though it seems like their conflict will cause a little less destruction than the fight between Kong and Godzilla. This is because, rather than a city, the backdrop for this titanic dispute is the battlefield stage of the Super Smash Bros. franchise!

The decision to use Donkey Kong in this role is very appropriate, given the history between the two characters. The King Kong films had a major impact on Shigeru Miyamoto’s development of the original Donkey Kong arcade game. The game achieved considerable success, which led MCA Universal to file a lawsuit against Nintendo in 1984. However, Nintendo has been able to successfully prove that the King Kong character actually exists in the public domain, and the company has the case as a result.
Since those early days, Donkey Kong has deviated quite a bit from his King Kong-inspired roots, while being one of Nintendo’s greatest characters. Despite beginning Mario’s arch-enemy, the character eventually became a full-fledged hero and starred in the massive popular Donkey Kong Country series. Of course, Bowser took on the role of Mario’s biggest enemy with the release of Super Mario Bros. in 1985. Ironically, Bowser’s next role will grow the character to Kaiju-like size Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Wrath. In the game, players will be able to take part in a massive battle between Bowser and a giant version of Mario. Unfortunately, there is no Donkey Kong on the site!
With Godzilla teen Kong which will be released in a few short months, it’s not hard to imagine that the film will inspire a slew of additional artworks like the ones made by @ TinaFate1!
