The physical modding community in the game is very talented, from creating portable versions of home consoles to converting Nintendo GameCubes into powerful computers. One specific group worked to make a portable Nintendo 64 as small as possible. The most recent was made in 2015. But GmanModz seems to have broken the record with a console that is 23.3% smaller.
In a recent video, GmanModz explains all the details of how he built the smallest Nintendo 64 laptop in the world. He gives a lot of incredible information, including how he uses computer technology to plan his approach, how he uses a 3D printer for some parts, but how he does most of the work basically in an “old-fashioned” way by disassembling a Nintendo 64 to fetch. and rebuild it in a portable console. He also explains many interesting details and specifications, including the fact that he made strategic decisions such as choosing the small Joycon controllers to save the smallest amount of space, or that the R and Z buttons are both shoulder buttons on top .
GmanModz also shows how the JoyCon analog works Turok, and how it can actually perform better than the traditional Nintendo 64 controller. Games like Perfectly dark (which eventually makes a comeback) was nice in the Nintendo 64 era, but was perhaps a bit held back thanks to a limited controller, so it’s an interesting idea to set up the games with a more modern controller .
Another enjoyable aspect of the video is simply watching all the video games being played. The Nintendo 64 had great games, and the idea of being able to play it on the go is fantastic for many. The actual functionality of the mini Nintendo 64 console still leaves room to be desired, but that’s really not the point. The goal here with the super small Nintendo 64 was actually just to create a fun project and break the record, and that’s exactly what GmanModz did.
