Nine injured after gunshot during 12-year-old birthday party in Louisiana

A shooting that broke out during a 12-year-old birthday party in Louisiana last week injured nine teens, including two who remain in the hospital, authorities said Monday.

The shooting took place Saturday night in LaPlace, about 30 miles west of New Orleans, the sheriff in St. Louis said. John the Baptist Parish said in a statement.

No arrests were made, and the sheriff, Mike Tregre, said that “not a witness” gave the authorities a formal statement about what happened.

According to the sheriff, investigating officers believe that more than 60 people gathered at the party when an argument broke out between two groups with an ongoing feud. Two rifles were fired, authorities said.

The injured include:

  • A 17-year-old boy shot in the arm
  • A 16-year-old boy grazed in the ribs
  • A 15-year-old boy shot in the foot
  • A 14-year-old boy shot in the leg
  • A 13-year-old boy shot in the leg
  • A 12-year-old shot in both legs
  • A 16-year-old boy shot in the stomach
  • A 14-year-old boy shot in the head

Seven of the injured partygoers were treated at a local hospital and released, the sheriff said. The boys were shot in the stomach and the head was admitted to hospital in a stable condition.

It was not clear if the injured 12-year-old was the boy who celebrated his birthday.

Additional details about the shooting were not immediately available.
