NHTSA wants Tesla to recall 158,000 vehicles with Tegra equipment

However, the feeds, in the form of NHTSA, are not satisfied with the strategy and today sent a letter (PDF) to Tesla urging the company to introduce a recall that would notify owners of 158,000 Model S and Model X vehicles built before March 2018. As the letter explains, the loss of access to the touch screen means the loss of the backup camera and controls for things like the unmasking of your windshield, which they say could lead to accidents .

As TechCrunch pointing out, they also write that ‘Tesla has given a confirmation that all units will inevitably fail given the finite storage capacity of the memory device. Tesla has provided its own statistical model that indicates the number of projected MCU repairs from 2020 to 2028, and estimates that replacement rates for MCU failures will peak in early 2022 and decline gradually until (almost) full revenue is reached in 2028. ”

The letter calls for a request from Tesla by January 27th. Earlier today, Tesla openly promoted NHTSA’s five-star safety rating for the Model Y, but did not publicly comment on the recall request.
