NFL Rumors: Insiders Apparently Can’t Agree on Carson Wentz’s Future as an Eagle

With head coach finally appointed by Nick Sirianni, the Eagles’ biggest off-season question is now officially what to do with Carson Wentz, the former (and perhaps future?) Franchise full-back who lost his opening job to rookie Jalen Hurts last season.

Wentz has reportedly been unhappy with his benching, and he sounds at odds with former head coach Doug Pederson. Will Pedent be ready to iron out his differences with the organization once Pederson is gone and Sirianni enters?

And also … does the Eagles still want Wentz as QB1?

If you listen to most of the included NFL reporters these days, your guess sounds just as good as theirs.

On Monday, some very solid and well-obtained football reporters presented what they heard about the situation in Wentz.

First, Mike Garafolo, NFL Network, according to 94WIP:

“I mentioned it when Doug was fired and everyone said, ‘Well, that means Carson Wentz is back. ‘ … No. There is more to this. ‘

Dan, FOX Sports’s Jay Glazer:

“I think the Eagles are going to try to make it work with Carson Wentz, so I don’t think he’s going to be there on his own.”

Very interesting, if it is also a bit confusing.

For now, it looks like there is more pressure on the Eagles to settle matters with Wentz if both parties are to reconcile by next season. Glazer’s report makes it sound as if the Eagles want Wentz back, while Garafolo’s report makes it sound as if Wentz is still bitter, while the Eagles’ share in the relationship is unclear.

There are a few ways these next steps can play out.

The Eagles can reach out to Wentz and say they still want him to be the starting quarterback, and Wentz can explain that he still wants to be here.

The Eagles may reach out to Wentz and say they still want him to be the starting quarterback, but Wentz does not want to rectify the relationship and eventually asks for a trade.

Or the Eagles can reach out to Wentz, say they still want him in Philly, but not guarantee the QB1 job, and see how Wentz responds.

It’s all fascinating, and it sounds like no one – not NFL insiders, and maybe not even Wentz or the Eagles – knows what’s coming next.
