NFL Rumors: ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. reveals what Jets can get in trading Sam Darnold

Decisions, decisions.

What will New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas do with the No. 2 pick in the 2021 NFL draft? He can use it to swap the board and save picks. Or he could use it to get help for the attack Sam Darnold. Or he may decide to end the Darnold experiment and pick a new franchise quarter.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. was asked which team is under the most pressure in the NFL draft. It’s no surprise that he picked the Jets. And he dropped a bunch of potential news in his explanation.

They have been in the basement of the AFC East for years, have another new coach and have the choice to turn things around quickly. They have two choices in the first round (Nos. 2 and 23), a very high choice in the second round (Nos. 34) and two third rounds (Nos. 66 and 87). This is a big concept for general manager Joe Douglas, and it starts with the Sam Darnold decision. As Douglas & Co. want to stay with the quarterback Darnold for another year, they need to get him some weapons so they can get a fuller evaluation. If they handle Darnold – can they get a second or third player for him, I think – they certainly take a quarterback with the No. 2 pick, but they still have to help him. They therefore need to add attacking playmakers and increase the depth of talent in defense. It’s not easy, but they have the capital to do it – if they strike a blow.

If Douglas decides to start at QB again, Justin Fields from Ohio State, Zach Wilson from BYU, and Trey Lance, North Dakota, from Ohio State will be.

Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, the leading quarterback on the draft board, is expected to go No. 1 overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
