NFL Rumors: 49ers Jimmy Garoppolo is Plan A’s Plan A on Quarter

While 49 Lyn’s general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan have said it’s out of season that Jimmy Garoppolo will remain their fullback in 2021, there seems to be one team hoping San Francisco will change its mind and ‘ can make a move on quarter.

The New England Patriots, according to Greg Bedard of The Boston Sports Journal, want to reunite with Garoppolo.

“From what I’ve been talking to people this past week, this past week, Jimmy Garoppolo is still not their plan A,” Bedard said earlier this week on “The Greg Bedard Patriots Podcast.” “That, if they have to set it up, exactly the optimal situation for the Patriots for next season, is that Jimmy G is coming back here. And that obviously depends on the 49ers doing something.”

Last season, the 49ers flirted with the idea of leaving Garoppolo before jogging it back with the man who helped them get to Super Bowl LIV. But after a 2020 season with an injury, many of the 49ers’ fans are ready for a new quarter.

Rumor has it that the 49ers are linked to Matthew Stafford before he was selected by the Detroit Lions to the Los Angeles Rams for Jared Goff and several drafts.

Disgruntled Houston Texans full-back Deshaun Watson is cited as a possibility for the 49ers, but his current team has no plans to trade the draft pick in the first round in 2017.

The 49ers could pick one of the quarterback prospects in the 2021 NFL draft, but that could mean future draft picks have to be given up to move on.

ESPN’s Todd McShay has unveiled his updated Mock Draft and he plans for the 49ers to trade up to 9th place with the Denver Broncos to select Alabama fullback Mac Jones.

“The Broncos could add something in the line of an extra second player (No. 43) and maybe a first or second second in 2022, in addition to the No. 12 pick this year,” McShay wrote. “It’s hard to tell at this point how eager the Niners will be after a quarter.”

If the 49ers had been able to score a quarterback of the best level in the first round of April, they would probably have been prepared to move on from Garoppolo.

And that would be music to the ears of the Patriots. After losing franchise icon Tom Brady to the free agency last season, they signed former NFL MVP Cam Newton. The union did not go as planned, and New England finished with a 7-9 record and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

But the chances of the Patriots’ second-round draft return in 2014 in New England rest on the 49ers to make an unexpected move for a quarterback. Until that happens, Bill Belichick, the Pats’ longtime coach, will only have to dream of reuniting with Garoppolo.
