NFL must delay AFC championship game until Patrick Mahomes of Chiefs can play, says Colin Cowherd

The Kansas City Chiefs face the possibility that star quarterback Patrick Mahomes will not be removed from a concussion protocol in time for Sunday’s AFC championship game against the Buffalo Bills, but Colin Cowherd, Fox Sports radio presenter, thinks the The NFL should make it so that it does not happen.

The longtime radio host suggested on Tuesday that the league should delay the game until Mahomes is healthy enough to play.

“We want Mahomes against Josh Allen, right?” Cowherd said in the show “The Herd.” “It’s reasonable. And I’m sitting here this morning thinking if I’m the NFL, Patrick Mahomes’ protocol goes through. I find the day Patrick Mahomes can play – and that’s when we play. Why not?”

Mahomes suffered a concussion in the third quarter after being tackled on the ground by Cleveland Browns’ linebacker Mack Wilson. He was slow to get up and even struggled with the help of coaches to walk off the field.

Coach Andy Reid on Monday did not want to speculate about Mahomes’ return and said they should follow concussion protocol.

“You don’t even have to think about it. You’re just moving forward,” Reid said. ‘You have an answer when he’s there and when he’s not there. I can not answer you a medical answer. I just do not know. ‘

Mahomes returned to the field on Wednesday for a light exercise with the team, according to the NFL protocol, sources told the NFL Network.

He has no symptoms and will undergo tolerance tests, but there is no certainty that he will be released to play against the Bills on Sunday.
