Newsom’s approval ratings fall in California as revocation threat increases

According to Gavin Newsom, governor of California, he suffered a concussion during the coronavirus pandemic, according to some new surveys, which could be a ‘warning’ to the governor, just as the recall attempt against him heats up.

A poll by the Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies, released Tuesday, showed that Newsom’s approval rating was 46% among registered voters compared to 64% in September.

“Promoting the decline is the negative assessment of the public about the way Newsom and the state government are handling the pandemic,” wrote Mark DiCamillo, director of the Berkeley IGS poll.

Registered voters surveyed largely do not think he is doing an excellent job of tackling coronavirus, distributing vaccines to the public, and drawing up consistent rules for home orders and business restrictions.

The approval comes down to the fact that Newsom faces a serious challenge to its political future.

California organizers of a recall effort said Thursday they had collected more than 1.4 million signatures. The Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs must ratify the signatures. The cut-off date is March 17 to collect 1,495,709 valid signatures to bring about a special election.

Voters polled in the Berkeley poll were cool for a recall attempt, with more thoughts that it would be bad for the state rather than good. But when asked how they would vote in a potential special election, 45% said they would retain Newsom, 36% said they wanted to remove him and 19% were undecided.

“These results should provide a strong warning to the governor,” said Eric Schickler, co-director of the Berkeley IGS poll. “If the re-election does continue, the state’s response to the pandemic should be seen more successfully for the governor than he now has confidence in the outcome of the election.”

Meanwhile, the Public Policy Institute of California’s poll released on Tuesday found that 52% of likely voters approve of the way Newsom handles his work. This is a significant decrease from May 2020 when Newsom enjoyed excellent approval for its initial coronavirus response.
