“I remain determined. “I just want you to know, we’re not going to change course, just because of some naysayers and doomsayers,” Newsom said. ‘So, the California critics out there who promote biased political power, grab with outdated prejudices and reject everything that makes California great, we say it; we will not be distracted from getting weapons and that our economy is flourishing again. It’s a battle for California’s future. ”
The reprimand comes because the reminder effort seems to be on the right track to garner enough signatures to enforce a special election that could jeopardize Newsom’s political future.
The organizers of the effort said Sunday they had collected 1.95 million signatures in support of the recall more than a week before the March 17 deadline. Only 1.5 million signatures are needed, but hundreds of thousands more are expected to be submitted with the expectation that some will be invalid.
“It’s more than enough to qualify this initiative for a special election later this year to make the people finally decide … what’s going to happen to the fate and future of the Government of California Gavin Newsom,” Randy Economy , a political adviser working on the effort, said Sunday.
The recall effort was fueled by boiling frustration among Republicans over Newsom’s restrictions, especially those against meetings and closure of affairs. The buzz surrounding the recall got even louder in November when the governor was spotted without a mask in a posh restaurant celebrating the birthday of a political adviser, contrary to the leadership of his government.
But it remains unclear whether Newsom is in danger of being fired should a special election be held. It is already difficult to oust a governor in a by-election; 2003 was the last year a governor in the state was started. Since then, California has only gotten bluer, with registered Democrats exceeding nearly 2-to-1 number of registered Republicans.
Newsom nods briefly at the criticism he has endured and says he will learn from the mistakes he made during the pandemic.
‘I know our progress has not always felt fast enough. And look, we made mistakes, I made mistakes, but we own it, we learn from it and we never stop trying, ‘he said.
The governor spent most of his speech defending his response to the coronavirus, citing, among other things, an early homeland order – the same kind of movement that forced Republicans to try to recall him.
‘We were the first state, the first state to stay at home, that helped us avoid the early rises in cases. The leading heads of our country’s leading research institutions and scientific enterprises immediately jumped into the development of groundbreaking treatments and vaccines. And while others compete to buy personal protective equipment at exorbitant prices, we have quickly built our own pipeline that provides critical equipment to millions and millions of essential workers, ”he said.
The governor also highlighted California’s vaccination efforts to end the pandemic, pointing out that 11 million doses of coronavirus vaccine have been administered. Newsom also saw a 53% drop in daily cases at the state high to just over 3,800 on Sunday and an 80 percent drop in hospitalizations.
“The building blocks of our recovery are really in place, and now we are leading the way out of this pandemic because we have listened to the experts and we have been led by evidence. “Today the light at the end of this tunnel is brighter than ever,” he said.
