Government Gavin Newsom uses a state of the nation address to empathize with pandemic victims and address California’s progress in defeating the coronavirus and delivering a message that can resonate with voters in a possible revocation election.
The Democratic governor delivered his third version of the annual speech at its most vulnerable point since taking office in 2019, with proponents of remembrance closing the frustration of voters over the year-long pandemic. While Newsom did not directly mention the recall campaign, he alluded to it by condemning ‘biased political power grabs’ – the first time he has publicly referred to the impending challenge.
In a breach of tradition that highlighted how the pandemic consumed California politics, the Democratic governor spoke from an empty Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles rather than address lawmakers in the state Capitol in Sacramento. Newsom also returned the state of the nation address that evening, seizing the opportunity to present his case to a larger section of the electorate, judging the governor’s performance through the lens of the pandemic.

The Democratic governor this year has the benefit of a record California state budget revenue over and above potential tens of billions of dollars from the new federal stimulus package.
