New Zealand tells travelers to stop copying other people’s travel photos

(CNN) – New Zealand is really bored about your Instagram posts.

The call was made in a two-minute video, with comedian Tom Sainsbury as a member of the “Social Observation Squad (SOS).” The officer follows tourists to some of the country’s most famous landscapes and urges them to stop traveling “under social influence.”

“I have been warned about a situation that has been happening a lot lately,” he said at the start of the campaign. “People have seen these photos on social media and are going to put a lot of effort into copying them.”

“You know them,” he adds, rattling off a list of cliched social media posts. “Hot tub’s back shot. Man sits still on the rock and reflects. Hot dog legs.”

The video is part of the New Zealand Tourism Board’s long-running campaign “Do Something New”. Previous episodes included a song by local celebrities Madeleine Sami and Jackie van Beek.

The campaign comes at an inconvenient time for tourists, and most international travelers are not allowed to enter the country.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Tuesday that the borders of New Zealand would remain closed for most of this year while the Covid-19 pandemic raged, but that the country would follow travel arrangements with neighboring Australia and other Pacific countries.

“Given the risks in the world around us and the uncertainty of the global introduction of the vaccine, we can expect our borders to be affected for much of this year,” Ardern said at a news conference.

To start again, authorities need confidence that the vaccinated Covid-19 will not be transmitted to others, which is not yet known, or that enough of the population will have to be vaccinated so that people can enter New Zealand safely. A travel bubble with Australia has been in place since October.
