New YouTube breakdown icons are coming to the webpage

After launching YouTube in the Android and iOS apps last year, YouTube’s new outline icons are now available on the web page.

If you visit the YouTube homepage today, load these new icons in the left track and navigation bar. This applies to Home, Explore, Subscriptions, Original, Library and more, but not YouTube Music – which is a logo.

Unlike the implementation of the mobile app, these outlines are never filled in, even if you visit a specific page. The current tab you are looking at is ever so slightly brighter compared to the non-selected icons. This obstructs the visibility somewhat.

Meanwhile, the icons are also visible in the top bar for voice search, uploading, switching of YouTube apps and notifications.

These icons, along with a custom font, are the latest sign that YouTube has a very different visual identity compared to other Google applications controlled by Material. This review approach makes the icons less likely to stand out on a busy page, which is good and bad, depending on the design goal. Although lighter, it also looks more generic.

The YouTube Music apps have yet to be updated with this new style, though it was noticed in the test.
