New York Tattoo Salon has ink designed to fade in just over a year

Tattoos are no longer forever.

Until recently, there were basically two options for getting a tattoo: the permanent kind, or the temporary kind that disappeared after a long shower. But now, people who want to get ink have a new option.

Ephemeral Tattoo, which opens later this month in the Williamsburg area of Brooklyn, hopes to attract a wide range of customers who may be curious about tattoos, but who are not willing to make their lifelong commitment, reports The New York Post. Instead, the ink used at Ephemeral Tattoo will take up to 15 months before the ink fades, which is reportedly the design.

Jeff Liu, the company’s CEO, and co-founders Josh Sakhai, Brennal Pierre and Vandan Shah reportedly spent six years developing the non-permanent ink. Unlike traditional tattoos, where the ink is designed to break down the body, the ink used over time is deliberately designed to break down.

So far, however, black is the only type of ink available at the salon. According to one tattoo artist who spoke to the Post, the ink cannot be blurred or used in grayscale, but artists can apparently get similar effects by scattering or crossing the ink in the design.

The New York Post spoke to Michael Bellamy, owner of Red Rocket Tattoo in Manhattan, about the new type of ink – and he was clearly not a fan.

“This is exactly what tattoos stand for: the perseverance, the dedication, the rebellious [spirit]”he said.” Everyone in my age group is going to laugh about this and say it is not for strong people. This is not the right thing to do. ‘
