New Tennessee laws come into force in 2021

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (WVLT / WTVF) – Things are changing in Tennessee as the new year approaches. These new laws come into force on 1 January 2021:

  • Everyone who buys cigarettes, vape products or other tobacco items must be at least 21 years old. The law previously allowed everyone who was 18 to buy tobacco.
  • Changes to the AMBER Alert system will take effect. With the new system, AMBER Alerts can be issued to individuals 21 and younger. The AMBER Alert system was previously only used for people under 18.
  • Rights have been extended to pregnant women in the workplace. The law on the fairness of pregnant workers empowers women to apply for more accommodation at work.
  • New legislation comes into force that allows 911 operators across the state to give CPR instructions to callers in emergencies. Prior to January 1, 911 operators in all provinces did not allow callers to instruct CPR.

The General Assembly will meet again on 12 January with a special session on education which, according to WTVF, will be held one week later.
