New Qualcomm fingerprint sensor could launch in Galaxy S21

The unveiling event of the Samsung Galaxy S21 is just a few days away, and today Qualcomm perhaps gave us a preview of one piece of the phone’s hardware with its latest fingerprint sensor that is bigger and faster.

With CES 2021 officially launched, Qualcomm is following last month’s announcements about the latest range of smartphone chips with its next-generation fingerprint sensors on display. The new Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2 will be 77% larger – 8mm by 8mm versus 4mm by 9mm. This means that you have a larger place to stick your finger, and that more of your finger will be scanned for greater safety.

According to Qualcomm, the second generation 3D Sonic Sensor can process 50% faster fingerprints between the increased surface area and its improvement on the inside than the previous generation. Done right, your next phone should be able to unlock a little faster than before.

In addition to speed and size improvements, Qualcomm has also managed to enable this new fingerprint sensor to feel through more materials, including foldable screens and even water. With any luck, the fingerprint sensor of your next phone should be able to scan your hand, even when wet.

Regarding when we can see this latest debut for fingerprint sensor, Qualcomm is proud to note that the previous generation was used in the Samsung Galaxy S10, Note 10, S20 and Note 20 phones. Combined with the official announcement that the 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2 will arrive in mobile devices in early 2021, it is quite possible that it will launch later this week during the Galaxy Unpacked event as part of the Samsung Galaxy S21.
