Almost a decade after its release as a bit of a mess on PS3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on PS5 can now be played at 60 FPS thanks to the work of one of the game’s console modders.
Created by a mud going through Wrighton, “Skyrim @ 60fps” is exactly what’s on the lookout, unlocking the game frames on PS5 to raise it from the standard 30 FPS. I downloaded and installed the mod yesterday, immediately noticed that Skyrim runs extra smoothly, and found myself being sucked back up the stairs by snow-capped hills in search of strange NPCs and moral consequences.
‘It was made using Bethesda’s own Creation Kit to create mods, but with a little trick in the software (which I did) a video on my YouTube channel “), Which makes it possible to upload initialization / config / .ini files to the PS4 platform, much like with Xbox or PC,” Wrighton said Kotaku in an email. ‘It works by changing a single value Skyrim‘s configuration file, which reads the game at startup. This allows the game to run at 60 fps instead of 30. “
Skyrim got a similar treatment on Xbox Series X last month, with mods raising the frame rates on the console to 60 FPS. Unlimited framerate mods have been on the Xbox for some time, but it was not until the next generation of consoles appeared that gamers were able to reap the benefits without messing with the hardware. (Interestingly enough, Digital Foundry reported that Skyrim actually ran on a more consistently increased frame rate on Xbox Series S than X.)
An added bonus with Wrighton’s mod is that it can be disabled and still work, allowing players to still earn trophies while playing at the higher level. Choosing dozens of locks to get the Thief trophy has never seemed so responsive.
