New Mexico Book Club Helps Tackle COVID-19

A book club in New Mexico changed gears during the pandemic – helping thousands of people in their community to be vaccinated for COVID-19, a report said.

The 11-member group – called The Fabulous Ladies Book Club – became involved in the attempt when a man, Dr. Stephen Rath, opened a vaccine clinic in the town of Ruidoso, reports KOB.

Rath began the operation after a State Health Department worker called for help.

“She said we have no one in Lincoln County who wants to vaccinate the public,” Rath said.

“She said they have vaccines that we can send if we can or want a vaccine clinic.”

The book club has joined in by promoting the new website.

“It was a big effort to put it out there, to reach out to people we knew and take calls from 7am,” said KOB member Alexandra Born.

‘I texted people at 11pm. “All of us try to be full of work all the time,” she said.

The book club’s work did not go unnoticed. After appearing in the Washington Post, they received praise from former first lady Michelle Obama.

“The Fabulous Ladies Book Club is an example of what is possible when people come together to help their community in times of need,” Obama tweeted.

“Their incredible organizing work has helped so many people in their city to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Very good, ladies! ”
