New Mass Vaccination Clinics Open in Philadelphia and Delaware County

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – A total of 16,000 people will be vaccinated this weekend at two new mass clinics in Philadelphia and Delaware County.

The one is a new FEMA site in the Esperanza Community Center in Hunting Park, one of the COVID-19 hardest hit.

Patients like Samuel Barios say they are relieved that they have a clinic in their area.

“Lack of transportation for people, it is difficult for them to get to remote places, they do not have cars,” he said.

The site will shoot about 2,000 people a day in an area with one of the lowest vaccination rates.

Officials say only about 16% of the city’s Spanish population has been vaccinated.

“It’s great for the environment, yes,” Barios said.

In Marple Township, lines of cars wrapped around Delaware County Community College. A new clinic there hopes to vaccinate 12,000 people with Johnson & Johnson this weekend.

“I would take anything I could get. I’ve been trying to get it for a while,” Derrick Edwards said.

The site is by appointment only and for the first weekend open to those in Phases 1a and 1b only.

The province says as more vaccines become available, people are getting more flexibility with appointments.

“People can go online and choose which site and which vaccine they want to receive. If they want more security in their schedule, they can sign up at one of our permanent locations, or they can sign up here for a while and come up here this weekend. ” said Howard Lazarus, the executive director of Delaware County.

The province hopes to have 140,000 people vaccinated before the summer.

“I have very mitigating circumstances, and I wanted to get rid of them to protect myself and my family,” Crystal White of Onley said.

She says she gets the chance in the hope that life will soon return to normal.

“I’m hopeful,” she adds.

As of now, about a third of the Philadelphians have been vaccinated.
